Chapter Fourteen—And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead.

gnosis of the creedConsciousness And Understanding

According to a person’s level of consciousness he understands or interprets what goes on around him. This is also true of religious teaching. Unhappily, people who consider themselves religious rarely ascend to God’s level or even to the level of those who first received and handed on the revelation (for all valid religion is revelation) from which the principles of religion have proceeded. Instead, they attempt to recast the ways of spirit into the image of their materialistic, egocentric consciousness. When Jesus said: “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life,”1 He meant that unless we shift our consciousness into the realm of Living Spirit we cannot possibly grasp His revelation. The teachings of Christ and the Fathers of the Church must be understood “in the spirit” by those who have entered into the greater life of higher consciousness through Christ. Otherwise, the Gospel will remain nothing more than ink on paper for us, as it does for countless millions of supposed “believers.”

Looking into the Gospels, we see that at first the Apostles placed a material interpretation on the spiritual sayings of Jesus. When He spoke of the leaven of the Scribes and Pharisees, they thought He was talking about bread.2 When He spoke of the sword of spiritual understanding, they thought He was telling them to have some weapons at hand.3 Even moments before His ascension, some of the Apostles asked Him if He was at that time going to give “the kingdom” to Israel,4 for they had completely failed to grasp the nature of the Kingdom of God. This, of course, was all changed when they received illumination through the Holy Spirit after Pentecost.

Conflict Within The Church

From the beginning the Church suffered from conflict between those who saw with the inner eye and heard with the inner ear and those who saw and heard only with the outer eye and ear of earth. For this reason Jesus said to the materialistic and ignorant: “Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world,”5 and Saint John the Baptist had also said: “He that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth.”6

The Church was therefore divided into the church of the spirit and the church of the flesh–those who understood the Christian revelation in a spiritual manner and those who saw it only from the viewpoint of earthly awareness.

There were two classes of Christians: Gnostics and the Agnostics, the Knowers and the Ignorant. The root of all disagreements within the early Church, as set forth in the book of Acts, was this tension between the “pneumatics,” the spiritual-minded, and the “somatics,” the physical-minded.

A Prophetic Parable

The situation was foretold by Jesus in the parable of the Sower in whose field weeds resembling wheat were sown by the enemy.

“Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares7 among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.”8

The Sower decided to let the weeds remain for a time lest the good plants be pulled up and destroyed. So it was with the Church from the onset. There were those with insight and those who understood very little. Yet, they were allowed to live side by side within the Church. But when the materialists gained the ascendancy by becoming the majority after the “conversion” of Constantine, they set about persecuting and driving out the Knowers (Gnostics) under the label of “heretic.”

It is an eternal principle that those of (truly) higher knowledge are always merciful and gentle with those of lesser understanding, whereas the ignorant are always violent and destructive towards those whose vision is greater than theirs. Even more astounding is the ability of the ignorant, in the heat of their persecutions and fulminations against the wise, to project the image of themselves as moderates and their victims as fanatics.

Why All This?

I am saying all this because for centuries the materialistic view of the “Second Coming” has held center stage in Christianity along with the distortions of just about everything else Jesus taught. The monastics and many (if not most) of the great theologian-scholars knew better, but, to their shame, they were too afraid of the mass ignorance to speak out against it. This was especially the case after many of the perversions of Christian truth had gained the support of official “Ecumenical Councils” which had supposedly spoken with the perfect mind of the Church–and therefore of Christ and the Holy Spirit.

During my days as a novice in an Eastern Orthodox monastery, I asked why we did not teach the things we knew to be true, rather than keep the right understanding for ourselves and let our fellow Orthodox Christians labor under such terrible delusions as everlasting damnation. I was invariably told that it would be “too difficult” and “confusing” after all these centuries, especially since the “infallible” Ecumenical Councils had supported the erroneous views. In other words, we were to live at peace with lies. But I found myself unable to do so. I have told the whole story in An Eagle’s Flight.

Jesus’ Words

The Person Who should know best about the Second Coming is Jesus Himself, so let us look at His words.

“For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.”9 This is the classic description of the Second Coming, and one which revivalists work for full effect. It seems to support their assertions, but if we just look at the next verse, the entire picture is radically changed.

“Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.”10 All who heard Christ speak these words have indeed “tasted death” long ago, yet the end of the world and the cataclysmic Judgment Day with which the evangelists terrify their prospective converts have not taken place. Therefore we can only come to two honest, sensible conclusions: either Jesus was mistaken, or the Second Coming is not an external, physical event, but a personal, mystical experience.

Let us look further.

“But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.…Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.”11 Not only has that generation passed away without there being any Second Coming such as the materialists teach, nearly sixty-five generations have elapsed and still no such phenomenon has occurred! To continue believing in such an interpretation is wilful ignorance, not faith.

There is another important passage regarding these matters: “But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.”12 These words of the Savior indicate that His Coming was very near at hand, within the lifespan of the Apostles. What, then, can the external, material interpretation of the Second Coming as some future, physical event be except a direct contradiction of Christ?

Misunderstanding Of Revelation

The fear-mongers that capitalize on their twisting of the Gospel also subject the book of Revelation to the same ignorance and hysteria, creating elaborate interpretations and projecting everything written therein into the future, although the opening verse of that book says: “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass.”13 In the same spirit of perverse contradiction, the corrupters of the Christian Gospel distort to their own ends this book of esoteric wisdom, attempting to make it an exposition of the future of this material world with which they are so obsessed.

A Matter Of Consciousness

Why do they do this? As Jesus said: “Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.”14 And Saint John the Baptist: “He that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth.”15 It is, as has been stated, a matter of where our consciousness is centered. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”16 In other words, a consciousness which arises (is born) from materiality must of necessity be material; but that which rises from a centering in the spirit will be spiritual.

The great success of these Prophecy Pushers is also explained to us by Saint John: “They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.”17 It is not the things of the spirit that interest the material mind, but rather the destiny of this earth in which that mind has invested countless lifetimes. To such a mind the genuine Gospel of Christ is pointless and even objectionable.

Self-Honesty Is Needed

Fundamentally, we must decide what we believe. If we believe the Scriptures are true, then we must believe that they correctly give us the words of Jesus. And if they correctly give us the words of Jesus, then we have to realize that when He spoke of His coming, His parousia (which literally means “presence”), He was not speaking of an external, historical event at all, but of an individual, personal, spiritual phenomenon.

A Clue From The Creed

The Creed tells us that “He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead.” If the materialists’ doctrine of the resurrection of the body is correct, then everyone at the Judgment will be in bodies and therefore be “alive.” So who are the dead that shall be judged? That itself should cue us that we are speaking of another type of happening. Also we find in the words of Christ: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.”18 Jesus is saying that “resurrection and judgment” is both a present and a future reality, a continuing process that is going to be happening as time flows on.

Just as “resurrection” and “judgment” are symbolic, so also the expressions “dead” and “living” are spiritual symbols instead of references to states of the physical body. Since He explicitly taught that the kingdom of God is within,19 so also must the resurrection and the judgment which precede the full inheritance of that kingdom be within. “Living” and “dead” are also descriptions of interior conditions of the spirit.

From all this it is easily seen that a physical interpretation of the Second Coming is not at all viable in the light of Christ’s own teaching.

The More Exact Meaning Of ‘Coming’ (Parousia)

For the true Christian, Christ has not gone away. He told the Apostles: “Lo, I am with you alway.”20 For like the kingdom of God, He is within us–one with us in full reality. This enables us to realize that in the Gospel the term parousia cannot be understood as “coming,” but exclusively as “presence.” Just as water is present in many forms as fog, clouds, rain, rivers, lakes, oceans, and ice, so also Christ is present in differing modes according to the consciousness of the individual.

Therefore it is not a matter of Christ coming to us, for He is already here, but rather one of recognition and manifestation–and of reception. It is the fulness of the revelation of “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”21 As Saint John said, we are now already the sons of God, yet we do not fully know what we shall ultimately become. However, at His full revelation when we shall “see” Him, we will find ourselves transformed into His perfect likeness. For this reason Saint Paul speaks of those who, through their intense spiritual aspiration, “love His appearing,”22 His full manifestation within them, so they can say with Saint Paul: “Not I, but Christ liveth in me.”23

From all this we can see that the Presence, the Parousia, of Christ must be a revelation, a recognition of His eternal presence which we have ignored and blotted out of our awareness through countless past lives as we sought for the kingdom of ego and materiality outside us rather than for the kingdom of God within. Like the Prodigal Son, we must “come to”24 and wake from our spiritual sleep to realize His abiding presence.25 This is why in the Bible it does not speak of seeking God as though He is somewhere distant from us, but rather speaks of seeking His “face”–the immediate, unchanged presence of God. And this is not just some uplifting or amazing experience to satisfy our curiosity or desire for some type of metaphysical thrill. It has a very practical result, for to see God is to be god.

“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass [mirror] the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”26 The “mirror” in which we behold the face of God is our own spirit which we find within the depths of our heart. As the kingdom of God is within, so also is the Second Coming within us–nowhere else. This is why the practice of meditation is absolutely necessary for an authentic Christian life, the life of transformation into Christ. “We shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”27 This is Christian faith and hope.

What Is The Judgment?

But what about “the judgment”? This, too, has been distorted by centuries of misunderstanding.

Before we consider what it is, we should consider what it is not. It is not the advent into the external world of an angry God Who shall drag all humanity before His throne and pronounce sentence of reward or punishment upon the individuals according to whether they have pleased or displeased Him. This is totally false, being simply the projection onto God of the negativity of the blind hearts of “theologians” who attribute their own pettiness and mania for power to a God Who is totally unknown to them.

A judge does not make a person guilty or innocent, but rather simply declares what a person has made himself by his own actions. Guilt and innocence lie in the hands of the individual, not the judge. So the Judgment is the revelation of what we are by our own will and actions. Of course we would not need such a diagnosis if we were honest with ourselves. But since we so completely deceive ourselves, coming to believe our own lies about our motives and actions, we have to be shaken awake and shown the truth of things. And that is the Judgment, an experience immeasurably more painful than the revivalists can imagine. The purpose of the Judgment is to show us our real face so we can come to knowledge of the truth. It is neither for reward nor punishment, but for the revealing and eventual healing of spiritual sickness.

When Is The Judgment?

When does the Judgment take place? Actually there are two forms of Judgment. The first takes place in each life when the spirit departs from the body. The modern stigmatist Teresa Neumann saw this type of Judgment many times. She said that the released person would rise up above the earth and be met by Our Lord accompanied by many saints and angels. There an entire review and analysis of the person’s life took place. If they were ready for life in higher planes of existence, they departed with the Lord and His company. But if they were not fitted for higher life, with great sorrow the Lord would depart from them and they would be left alone in the orbit of the earth plane, obviously to take birth again. She never saw anything but those two results, but other saints have witnessed that persons of consciously evil lives are sometimes taken away by terrifying beings to pass time in worlds that objectively picture their own inner conditions. This is not to punish them, but to help them awaken and see what they are doing to themselves by their negative deeds. This is the only type of hell that exists, and it is not permanent. The purpose of such hells is to heal, never to punish. In actuality it takes a goodly degree of spiritual evolution to even go to such a place.

Upon leaving the body, the spirit shakes off its dream-existence and begins to remember its true nature. In doing so, it enters into a thoroughly different kind of reality. All the logic and excuses of earth life melt away. Many of the things that made sense before are then seen as nonsense, and vice versa, for the center of consciousness has shifted from the body and emotions into the intellect and spirit. Memory embracing our past lives also awakens, producing an entirely different perspective than we had on earth. It is usually not very flattering to our egos. In truth, we judge ourselves at such a time. This is the “weighing of the heart” which ancient Egyptian religion taught occurred after death.

Furthermore, if an individual has been totally immersed in material consciousness, using his every act to tie himself more and more to the physical, at the moment of death the separation of the inner bodies from the physical body can be extremely painful, both psychologically and esoterically. Such a person often experiences great pain in the form of burning sensations. This has given rise to the stories of people supposedly experiencing the fires of hell. At times the individual experiences a feeling of being drawn downward by a great magnetic force, and from that come the accounts of people being dragged down to hell.

The person who regularly practices meditation is used to separating his consciousness from the material level and has no such difficulties at the time of death. For him the separation from the physical body is a release into freedom, a coming home to the place where he has already been centering his awareness, “the slipping of the dewdrop into the shining sea.” For such a one death does not even exist.

Symbolisms

The symbolic Byzantine hymns of Judgment Sunday say: “When Thou shalt come, O righteous Judge, to execute just judgment, seated on Thy throne of glory, a river of fire will draw all men amazed before Thy judgment seat. The powers of heaven will stand beside Thee, and in fear mankind will be judged according to the deeds that each has done.” And: “The books will be opened and the acts of men will be revealed before the unbearable judgment seat, and the whole vale of sorrow shall echo with their fearful sound of lamentation. The trumpets shall sound, the tombs shall be emptied.” Even more: “When the thrones are set up and the books are opened and God sits in judgment, oh, what fear there will be then! When the angels stand trembling in Thy presence and the river of fire flows before Thee, what shall we do then, guilty of many sins? When we hear Him call the blessed of His Father into the kingdom but send the sinners to their punishment, who shall endure His fearful condemnation?”

The Final And Great Judgment

Although there are minor Judgments after each earth life, these hymns and the accounts in the book of Revelation are referring to what is called “The Final Judgment.” This is the experience which takes place when the individual spirit leaves the body for the final time or when, in life, the last bonds of earthly ignorance are broken and illumination is received which frees the spirit forever from needing to take up earthly birth. It is a process of thorough purification and transmutation on all physical, mental, and spiritual levels. To say that it is traumatic28 is to vastly understate. All our incarnations on the earth plane (and not just the human ones) pass before us, which is “the earth and the sea giving up its dead.” The sum of each life is brought before our consciousness, which is each “man” standing before the Throne of God.

The “Throne of God” is that area of our occult anatomy which manifests in the physical body as the pituitary, thalamus (including the hypothalamus), and pineal glands. In the Final Judgment they are fully activated on the psychic and spiritual levels as well as the physical. The “Valley of Jehoshaphat” is the fold in the middle of the brain. The lesser “thrones” are the psychic centers in the brain which are then activated. The “river of fire” is the flow of all our life energies upward into those areas of higher awareness. Before us will come for scrutiny our every thought, as Jesus said: “I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”29 The Greek term logos, here translated “word,” also means ideas, attitudes, speech, and acts of will. It can even mean states of mind. Here, it means all these things together. Logos has the meaning of “expressive intelligence,” as well, so it also embraces all states of consciousness.

Good As Well As Evil

It is not just the evil that is presented before us in the Judgment, but also the good–everything to which we have been attached in our previous lives. When we see the almost endless array of things we have loved and identified with being brought to judgment and swept away to make way for our new life on the paradisiacal level, we become terror-stricken. We feel that we are being annihilated, that when it is all over we will just be zeros! And indeed, we will see going into the “lake” of transmuting “fire” much that we have labored to produce and maintain, much that we have thought made a better person of us through its acquisition. To see it all going from us can be unbearable. All that is earthly in us must be obliterated before we can ascend to the next level of evolution. As Jesus told us, we must lose our small egoic life to find our greater, divine life.30 “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”31

However, this process takes place only with the full cooperation of our free will. If we shrink back from this transmuting cataclysm and call “halt!” God will respect our intervention, stop the process, and permit us to remain unchanged. Only the bravest pass through this awesomely terrible ordeal. Saint Paul says: “Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”32 The fire spoken of here is the deifying fire of the Holy Spirit as it effects our final passage from earth to heaven–from matter to spirit.

“Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”33 “The last trump[et]” is another designation for “the sound of many waters,”34 “the voice of many waters,”35 “a sound from heaven as of a mighty rushing wind,”36 and “the Amen,”37 all of which are symbolic references to the Holy Spirit in Her aspect as Cosmic Vibratory Energy, known as Aum in the Hindu and Buddhist Scriptures, and as Amen in the Jewish and Christian traditions. Its secret is the secret of immortality, for when we undergo the ultimate Baptism, immersion in the full power of the Divine within, we are swept upward in its divine momentum. Our total being is interpenetrated with the divine Light and Power which breaks up all the old patterns of energy and consciousness, reshaping them into the likeness of the Eternal. “The former things are passed away.…Behold, I make all things new.”38

All this, including the transmutation from human to angelic consciousness, must be understood as being fundamentally inexpressible. There are many more rungs to be traversed on the ladder to divinity, and many more “kingdoms” to be possessed before reaching infinity.

It is evident that the Christian must be totally committed to the mystical life–the life of meditation in which all these things take place–in order to attain the Kingdom of Heaven.

Therefore

“The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.… Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”39

7) The word translated tares is zizania, known in English as darnel. Darnel looks exactly like wheat, and when growing mixed in with it cannot be detected at all. But when wheat becomes ripe, the weight of the full grains cause it to bow down. The darnel, on the other hand, remains upright because the seed husks are really empty.
